When should a Pomeranian Puppy be potty trained and how?
I have a 7 month female Pomeranian puppy who doesn’t seem to get the concept of house breaking. I was frusturated when I read by other people that some Pomeranians never get trained. So my questions are:
1) When should a Pomeranian be 100% potty trained?
2) What is the best method to potty train my stubborn puppy and how?
Please help me! Thank you!
1) assuming there is no medical issue, dogs gain the ability to “hold it” at the age of 6 months.
2)Crate Training is the easiest, most effective way to potty train. Get a crate, and leave the door open and let the puppy explore it. Don’t force the dog into it against her will. Throw toys or treats into the crate the encourage her to go into it. When you can not supervise her, leave her in the crate with a toy to keep her busy.
When you are around, put her on a leash and hook the leash to your belt loop. This way, she can’t sneak off and go potty behind your back. Because you are having a lot of trouble, I would recommend a feeding and watering schedule. Feed her 3 times a day (at 1 year, switch to 2 meals a day)and take her out to go potty 15 mins after she finishes eating. For the water, put the bowl down every 2 hours and let her drink if she is thirsty. After 10 mins, pick up the bowl. If she doesn’t drink when you offer her water, she isn’t thirsty. She will have to go potty about 15 mins after drinking. Make a strict schedule and stick to it. It will take time and patience. The more consistent you are the better. Do not let her roam free in the house until you trust her not to have an accident.
Edit: Never ever spank her. This will break the bond between you two and make her more likely to bite. Do not rub her nose in it either, this will teach her to hide it from you next time
