What would you think of a professional dog trainer and walker that did this?
There are three dogs in the house (one is just visiting.) A trainer comes to the house who is paid to care for and walk the other two dogs. After a walk, the trainer gives the two dogs a treat (with the third dog in the same room,) but does not ask the owner of the third dog if he should get a treat as well.
Does that seem a bit unfair to give treats to all but one dog?
Does that make you wonder how much that trainer actually cares about dogs?
If I am reading more into the situation than necessary, tell me. I am only seeing it from my point of view, and perhaps I am missing something that a person in the trainer’s position would understand.
I think it’s unfair to expect the trainer to assume it was OK to give any treat/food to the third, visiting, dog. What if the dog was on a special diet and couldn’t eat treats? If the trainer gave the dog something and it made the dog sick, the trainer would be in the wrong. The trainer was hired to something specific for two dogs; he/she can’t and shouldn’t make assumptions about a visiting dog. Sure, if the owner was around and the trainer could have asked, well OK, maybe the trainer should have asked about giving a treat… but I agree with the other posts, he/she doesn’t have to.
Dogs aren’t like humans – they don’t have notion of fairness. If they did, they wouldn’t resort to thievery if you leave your steak within their reach while you leave the room.
