Why have my dogs lost their House Training lessons?
They are 3 yrs old,and male litter mates. They were doing well, but seem to have reverted to Puppy Behavior. We have them outdoors most ot the AM, and most of the PM, and the yard is theirs (fenced of course).
If you only recently arranged their schedule in that way, so that they’re outside the majority of the day, they might be learning to eliminate indiscriminately. Dogs who spend most of their time outdoors can relieve themselves wherever and whenever they want, and it’s possible for that behavior to transfer indoors as well. Try spending a little more time with them indoors, and take them out specifically so that they can relieve themselves. You should basically revert to treating them like unhousebroken Puppies; here’s how to housebreak a puppy most efficiently:

If all they’re doing is urinating indoors, they may be marking. It’s by no means uncommon. If they’re intact, you should consider neutering them, which should help. If this is already an established habit, though, you’re going to have to focus on training to solve the problem. You can basically follow the same rules at in normal Housebreaking: supervise them closely, take them frequently, reward them very heavily for peeing outdoors, and crate them when you can’t watch them. Since you’ll be supervising them, you’ll be able to intervene the instant that one of them is poised to relieve himself. That’s when you rush him outdoors. You can make a loud, jarring noise (like shaking a can of pennies) to distract them if they’re about to go, too.
It’s also possible that one of them has a urinary tract infection or something of the sort that is causing him to have accidents indoors. If these accidents continue, consider having their urine tested, just in case. If one of them is having accidents due to a UTI, the other might be following suit and urinating indoors in the good old spirit of marking. (Dogs, especially — but not exclusively — males, like to mark their “territory” and often pee either in the same place or where another dog has peed, to sort of claim it. If one has a UTI, the healthy one might be just peeing over where the other one peed.)
By the way, make sure you’re cleaning all accidents using an enzyme cleaner like Nature’s Miracle. You want to be sure that all traces of the urine are gone, since dogs are attracted to pee in the same areas by the odor.
