This is a common question that most first-time Dog owners ask me. Before I answer your question, let me ask you some questions instead:
- Do you use cookies, collars, head halters or clickers to make your Pomeranian Dog respond and follow your commands?
- Do you have to elevate your voice all the time you want your Pomeranian Dog to pay attention to you?
- Does your Pomeranian Dog always come or sit on command – anytime and anywhere you want him to?
If your answers are largely in the denial, it’s time you seriously reconsider your position as a motivated dog trainer and a suitable pet owner. Your Pomeranian needs to be shown what is proper behavior and what is not tolerable. Obedience training doesn’t solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem.

Get Your Pomeranian Dog To Pay Attention To You
Pomeranians are very little dogs, with outgoing personalities. These dogs are also very sociable and friendly. Pomeranians are the same as any dog, but need slight modifications to fit them to the particular breed. Pomeranians respond most favorably to commands that are firm.
Before you begin any dog training, you must first establish yourself as the “Alpha dog” where the human refers as to the dominant dog, and on the very idea that your dog perceives you as another dog. Your Dog must know that you’re the leader of the pack and it is YOU who is in charge.
Here is a list of simple DOs and DONTs that you must follow if you want to be the dominant:
- Always go out or come in through the door first – remember you are the ruler;
- Always eat first – give your Dog something to eat only after you’ve completed your meal;
- Don’t circle around your Pomeranian Dog when he is lying on the floor – make your Dog move out of your way instead;
- Don’t let your Pomeranian Dog set the rules – pay attention to him when you think fit and not whenever he wants;
- Don’t allow your Pomeranian Dog to sleep with you in your bed – separate his sleeping area clearly.
Once you successfully established yourself as the “Alpha dog”, teaching your Dog and making him pay attention will be a lot easier than you can envision. Remember, if your Pomeranian Dog does not learn to “listen”, all your training efforts will be to no avail! Training your Pomeranian dog to obey your commands open up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want it to do.

This is the first and the most important step required in Dog Training. If your Pomeranian Dog doesn’t recognize his name, you can’t have his attention for training him any other commands.
To make sure that your Pomeranian Dog recognizes his name, take a treat in your hand and hold it away from your body. Call your Dog’s name. He is most possible to look at the treat in your hand. Continue calling his name until he turns and sees your eyes. Give him the dog treat immediately. Repeat this exercise by holding the treat in the other hand. Once you’re sure that your Dog has learned to response to his name, just call his name and reward him for looking at you by cuddling or with a hug.
You must understand that Pomeranian Dogs respond to and comply with every command given by his owner far better to loads of patience and positive reinforcements than they do to compulsion or force.
